Vacuum Seal with a Straw

I have yet to find the cost of a food vacuum sealer palatable, so I use a straw to try to avoid freezer burn and spoilage. I put the left over food I want to put in the freezer in a ziploc bag, insert my straw, snap the ziploc up to the straw and suck air out. As I get to the end, I suck, pull out the straw and as quick as possible seal the rest of the way all at the same time. May not be as good as a vacuum sealer, but would bet it's 80% as good, and virtually costless. I do save the straw unless I stick it in something nasty accidentally.

I bought this vacuum sealer http://www.sorbentsystems.com/sinbosealer.html and I like it a lot. I think it is very economical- good price, and it uses ordinary bags! You don't have to buy special ones! I save all the mylar packaging from food items- it's amazing how it adds up and it's perfectly reusable. I just open it carefully, or sometimes snip some off the top if it got messed up, and go to town.

Thanks, Caya.

Every time I see a vacuum machine in a store I am drawn to it, but as soon as I realize I have to buy special bags, I drop it like a hot coal! :) I love that you reuse the bags from the store, I might just go for it. Thanks for the link.

I would be worried about accidentaly sucking up some raw meat juices if I was using a straw.

Years ago, I bought this for my sister:http://www.pump-n-seal.com/
I was fortunate enough to be able to try it out and loved it! It's on my wish list! You don't need any special bags either! Uses no electricity. It's great!

Under $50. Not bad...

you can roll the air out too, roll your food and roll out the air as you roll around the unused bag part and seal it up..
